Secure 2 domains using 1 certificate

01-09-2011 15:20:00

Some SSL products secure one domain name, but in 2 options: with and without WWW prefix. This free option is available just for a few certificates.

For several Internet users a domain CertyfikatySSL.pl and the name with WWW prefix www.CertyfikatySSL.pl may be the same internet name. However, the DNS system, responsible for recognizing Internet addresses, treats them as a 2 different domains. Security of this 2 domain versions is very important when user types the address of the website by himself and we can't be sure which version will be chosen.

Just a few SSL certificates have an option to secure both types of 1 domain: the main one and with WWW prefix. From our offer this option is free for standard certificates issuing by 3 vendors: Comodo, RapidSSL and GeoTrust. It does not include the wildcard, multi-domain and UC types.

How to secure 2 domains for the price of 1?

For Comodo:

  • order certificate for a main domain,
  • type it in the same format as a Common Name when generating CSR,
  • domain with WWW prefix will be secured automatically.

For GeoTrust and RapidSSL:

  • order certificate for a domain with WWW prefix,
  • type it in the same format as a Common Name when generating CSR,
  • main domain without WWW prefix will be secured automatically,
  • this option works just with second level domains, e.g. your-domain.pl, your-domain.net. It does not work for your-domain.co.uk and domain.biz.pl etc.
